Role Profile
1. Purpose of Role
The Consultant role is a key position within Oxera’s Competition Economics centre of excellence. Consultants apply advanced economic and analytical tools to contribute to a variety of competition-related projects, including antitrust investigations, mergers, market inquiries, damages assessments, and regulatory matters. The role requires strong problem-solving skills, economic expertise, and the ability to work effectively in teams to deliver high-quality insights for clients.
Candidates applying for this position should have an excellent academic background in economics and at least two to four years of relevant experience in economic consulting, competition authorities, or related fields. A Master’s degree in Economics or a related discipline (e.g., Finance, Econometrics) is highly desirable.
2. Job Characteristics
Assigned to the Competition Economics centre of excellence, with opportunities to contribute to projects across other Oxera teams.
- Expected to work on three to four projects at any one time, collaborating with colleagues across the firm.
- Expected to deliver robust economic analysis using microeconomics, industrial organisation, and quantitative methods.
- Will work under the supervision of senior colleagues but should demonstrate increasing independence in managing workstreams.
- Will engage in brainstorming sessions for project strategies, proposals, and thought leadership initiatives.
- Will have varying degrees of client contact, engaging with clients in a polished and professional manner.
- Responsible for managing own time effectively and prioritising tasks within project deadlines.
- Expected to develop new ideas and methodologies using the latest research and techniques relevant to competition economics.
- Promotion to Senior Consultant typically occurs within three to four years, depending on performance and contribution to the business.
3. Key Responsibilities
Consultants in the Competition Economics Centre of Excellence will provide rigorous economic analysis across a range of business activities, including:
- Managing discrete tasks within larger competition projects, including:
- Structuring consultancy outputs;
- Analysing data using quantitative techniques (e.g., econometrics, simulations, pricing models);
- Interpreting results using advanced microeconomics and industrial organisation frameworks;
- Drafting high-quality client reports and presentations.
- Presenting economic findings to clients and stakeholders in a clear and authoritative manner.
- Contributing to Oxera’s publications and thought leadership (e.g., articles, academic papers, and industry reports).
- Supporting business development activities by identifying client needs, translating these into proposals, and keeping up-to-date with competition policy developments.
- Representing Oxera at external events, conferences, and training courses, and contributing to internal knowledge-sharing initiatives.
In addition, Consultants will:
- Comply with Oxera’s internal processes, including time tracking and project management systems.
- Demonstrate the ability to accurately estimate the time and effort required for tasks.
- Maintain strict client confidentiality and adhere to professional standards.
4. Communication Requirements
A Consultant in the Competition Economics team must:
- Communicate complex economic concepts clearly and concisely in written reports, emails, memos, and presentations.
- Demonstrate strong teamwork and collaboration with colleagues across different projects and practice areas.
- Be proactive in seeking feedback from managers and providing constructive input to junior team members.
- Manage client interactions effectively, ensuring clarity, professionalism, and responsiveness.
- Contribute to an inclusive and intellectually stimulating work environment through active participation in discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions.
5. Skills & Expertise Required
- Strong academic background in Economics, ideally with a Master’s degree.
- 2–4 years of relevant experience in economic consulting, competition authorities, or academia with a focus on competition economics.
- Proficiency in quantitative analysis and econometric techniques (e.g., Stata, R, Python, or equivalent software).
- A solid understanding of competition policy, antitrust investigations, mergers, and regulatory economics.
- Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to develop creative solutions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience drafting reports and presenting findings.
- Ability to manage multiple workstreams effectively while maintaining high-quality output.
- Fluency in English and Spanish (additional European languages are a plus).
